Splendour Festival Nottingham

Since 2008 Splendour Festival has been bringing both international and local music stars and live entertainment acts to Nottingham for a family friendly day festival.


Background

Splendour is all about bringing the Nottinghamshire community together for a day of great music, comedy, local talent and fun activities. Wollaton Park provides the perfect setting, where special memories can be made with friends and family. There really is something for everyone and 2019 certainly didn’t disappoint with over 25,000 people enjoying incredible sets from Manic Street Preachers, The Specials, Rag’n’Bone Man and All Saints. Music is not the only thing on offer with guests being able to enjoy a whole host of activities including yoga, salsa, face painting, silent discos, dodgems and much, much more.


Splendour is a really special calendar event for the DGTL team. Not only is it local, but having worked with the festival for the last 5 years, we really do feel invested in its success. The day is always one of our filming highlights of the year.


We are lucky that the DHP team give us a lot of creative freedom meaning we are able to try new things each year, without of course losing the unique Splendour vibe.

Scope

Despite huge nighttime headliners such as Hunee and Inner City, the chilled holiday vibes during the day, were just as important to capture for the content. Kala wanted to ensure that the content reflected the unique hybrid of relaxing retreat and vibrant party which would appeal to a variety of different people and their interests.


A short highlights edit was released at the close of the festival with the rest of the content due to be released over the next 6 months. The scope of the brief was varied with multiple mini edits showcasing different experiences available at Kala; secret beach parties, great local food, water sports and luxury hotels. With so much going on, it was important the team managed the schedule in the right way to ensure all elements were captured.

How we created the content 

DGTL had a team of 3 for Splendour 2019 and with more activities and more guests than ever before, we really did have a lot to cover in the day. Of course, being a British one day festival we can never rely on the weather and as expected it was rather temperamental; we were dodging the showers all day. When the sun came out it was all hands on deck; which would have been easy if the signal on site was strong, but of course, it wasn’t.

We needed to ensure we captured the key headline acts as well as the essence of the festival; family moments, food and drink, face painting, the comedy stage and the general mood and atmosphere around the festival. We completed multiple drone flights throughout the day, whilst dodging rain showers and liaising with Event Control. It wasn’t only the festival schedule that we had to keep an eye on, and with the internet being limited, it really was a case of watching the clouds.


The outputs

What was the final result?

We produced a short highlights video immediately following the festival; please see the video above. The short form videos for social will now be produced and used by DHP over the coming months and in the run up to next year’s festival. Images in this portfolio courtesy of Matt Madden.
